Violet Dawn Walker by Eclectixx Violet Dawn Walker by Eclectixx
The Violet Dawn Walker, Megokapia quadricornia, is a resident of the perpetually twilight northern land mass of the planet Costatis.

This large creature is the primary prey for the Emperor Dawn Stalker, an equally impressive ambush predator. Because it has no other major defenses, the Violet Dawn Walker has evolved a sense of hearing that is unmatched anywhere in the known universe.

What were ancestrally a simple pair of horns used for defense and display have evolved into impressive auditory receivers. Paired into fore-and-aft bugle-shaped extensions, these specialized "ear-horns" channel even the faintest sounds towards highly developed auditory receivers. The Violet Dawn Walker can create a 3-dimensional model of their environment within their head based on sound alone, and can detect the presence of predators from many kilometers away.

This is important because the Violet Dawn Walker must constantly be on the move in order to stay several kilometers away from their main predators. Only by keeping such a large distance between them can they avoid becoming the Emperor Dawn Stalkers' next meal.

The Violet Dawn Walker uses brilliant purple colored bioluminescent displays to attract small flying orthonestes which nest in its massive mane. The orthonestes provide the service of keeping the Violet Dawn Walker's auditory receivers free from parasites, and in return they have access to a large mobile sanctuary in which to nest.

I hope you plan to do the Dawn Stalker as well!
This pic is gorgous! I really enjoy the light effect and the whole scene gives off a twilight-like atmosphere.
Watching it I get the same feeling I do when I'm standing in a field at twilight and watching the fireflies.

You've also gotten me curious about the rest of the planet! What's the rest of it like? And why is the northern
land mass always in twilight?

GOD bless

I love the concept of life evolving the ability to see 3-dimensionally, much like the dolphin.

I'v been staring at your artwork for the past fifteen minutes with my jaw dropping in awe. You are an amazing artist, or as I like to put it, Envisioner. Everything in your gallery is amazing, especially the stories and histories behind each of your creations. If you were ever to publish a book containing these creatures, even just a kind of 'creature dictionary', I would most definitely buy it! :)

I can't help but wonder what they taste like... and what lengths a sapient being would have to go to in order to bring one down.

How big is the Violet Dawn Walker, in comparison to an adult human?
Eclectixx Featured By Owner Apr 19, 2011  Professional General Artist
I imagined them being about 15 foot tall for an average adult, so roughly 2 1/2 time taller than an adult human male. In comparison, an adult giraffe is about 16 to 18 feet in height, and an adult African elephant is roughly 10 to 13 feet in height.
